This is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (April 21–27, 2024) and the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) is highlighting an unsolved case in hopes of generating new leads to solve the case. Suffolk County Crime Stoppers is offering a fast cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
The first case SCPD is seeking the public’s help on is a fatal hit-and-run that occurred in Huntington Station on March 4, 2023. Bernarda Fernandez was walking westbound along the north side of Jericho Turnpike and was crossing Oakwood Road when she was struck from behind by a dark-colored SUV. The SUV then fled the scene in a northbound direction on Oakwood Road. Fernandez was able to call 911 but ended up succumbing to her injuries while being transported to Huntington Hospital.
