Vincent Dougherty, 64, faces a litany of charges for his alleged role in a spree of burglaries that terrorized the North Shore of Nassau County. Appearing in court before Judge Robert McDonald, Dougherty was arraigned on Wednesday on three counts of Burglary in the Second Degree and four counts of Attempted Burglary in the Second Degree. With bail set at a staggering $1 million cash, $1 million bond, and $5 million partially secured bond, Dougherty’s future hangs in the balance as he awaits his next court date on May 30, 2024.
“Vincent Dougherty is an alleged career criminal with burglaries spanning over decades,” stated DA Donnelly, shedding light on the severity of the accusations against Dougherty. The alleged modus operandi involved lurking in the backyards of affluent neighborhoods, gaining entry through unlocked doors or by smashing windows, and making off with luxury items.
According to the indictment and investigation, Dougherty targeted homes in exclusive areas, often during the early morning hours. His alleged crime spree included thefts of high-end handbags and valuables from residences abutting public properties or wooded areas.
Surveillance footage captured the brazen acts, providing crucial evidence for law enforcement. Dougherty’s arrest on May 14, 2024, marked a significant breakthrough in the case, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Nassau County Police Department’s 8th Precinct Squad.
The charges against Dougherty, including attempts to burglarize additional homes in Glen Head, Syosset, and Old Westbury, underscore the gravity of the allegations. With each completed burglary carrying a potential sentence of up to 25 years to life in prison, Dougherty faces the full weight of the law.
The charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty.
