Massapequa Man Arrested for Gas Line Damage at Local Pizza Shop

Massapequa Park, NY — A Massapequa man has been arrested following an incident at Sgambatis Pizza on Merrick Road, where a damaged gas line was discovered late Saturday night.

On March 9, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Seventh Precinct officers responded to a report of a natural gas smell at Sgambatis Pizza, located at 4952 Merrick Road. Upon arrival, it was determined that the gas line had been deliberately damaged, posing a serious risk to public safety.

After a thorough investigation, detectives from the Nassau County Arson Bomb Squad identified Raymond Sgambati, 48, of 6 Anchor Drive, Massapequa, as the individual responsible for the damage. Sgambati was arrested without incident.

Sgambati has been charged with Burglary in the 3rd Degree, Attempted Arson in the 3rd Degree, and Reckless Endangerment in the 2nd Degree. He was arraigned on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the motive behind the incident and to ensure there are no further risks to the community.
