Two Men Arrested for East Patchogue ATM Burglary Spree

Suffolk County Police arrested two men in connection with a series of ATM burglaries earlier this year. On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at approximately 4:50 p.m., John Mahoney and Jamie Volini were taken into custody following an investigation by Major Case Unit detectives.

According to police, Mahoney and Volini orchestrated a string of commercial burglaries between March 5 and March 11, forcing entry through broken doors and windows to access closed gas stations and businesses. The duo specifically targeted ATMs, either damaging them in failed attempts or successfully stealing them.

Jamie Volini, 46, of East Patchogue, was apprehended at the intersection of Sills Road and Montauk Highway. He was later charged with two counts of Burglary 3rd Degree, Attempted Burglary 3rd Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 4th Degree for cocaine found in his possession. John Mahoney, 41, of Mastic Beach, was arrested without incident at approximately 7:10 p.m. in front of his home. He faces five counts of Burglary 3rd Degree and one count of Attempted Burglary 3rd Degree.

The investigation revealed the following incidents:

  • On March 6 at 2:56 a.m., the suspects attempted to open an ATM at a Mobil Gas station on Portion Road, Holtsville, but were unsuccessful.
  • At 3:24 a.m. on the same day, they successfully gained entry to a 7-Eleven on Portion Road, Ronkonkoma, and removed the ATM.
  • Overnight on March 11, they damaged the back door of Ronkonkoma Deli on Veterans Memorial Highway but failed to gain entry.

Additionally, Mahoney was implicated in other burglaries:

  • On March 5 at 12:42 a.m., he removed the ATM from Blue Moon Beer and Smoke Shop on Main St., Holbrook.
  • On March 8 at approximately 3:50 a.m., he attempted to take an ATM from Abdi Card and Smoke Shop on Montauk Highway, East Patchogue.
  • Later that night, he cut into the ATM at Pupuseria Y Taqueria Grocery and Deli on Montauk Highway, Shirley, stealing the money.

Both suspects are being held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and are scheduled for arraignment on June 19 at First District Court in Central Islip.

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding these burglaries to contact Major Case Unit detectives at 631-852-5555. Suffolk County Crime Stoppers is also offering a cash reward for tips leading to an arrest.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
