A North Merrick man, known for his criminal past, was caught by Nassau County Police officers after breaking into Jim-Jam Cleaners early Monday morning. Jose Portillo-Sandoval, 36, was apprehended by police after an alarm went off at the cleaners at 1200 Merrick Avenue.
Upon arrival at 1:25 am, officers spotted Portillo-Sandoval walking away from the scene. Recognizing him from previous burglaries, officers detained him. Their investigation revealed that Portillo-Sandoval had entered the business through a rear window, stolen a cash register, and attempted to flee.
Portillo-Sandoval, already wanted for several other crimes in Nassau County, including Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Burglary, Criminal Mischief, and Petit Larceny, was placed into custody without incident. He faces a new charge of Burglary in the 3rd Degree and is scheduled for arraignment on Monday, July 1, 2024, at First District Court in Hempstead. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
