A Central Islip man has been indicted after allegedly causing a high-speed crash in Brentwood that seriously injured a mother and two teenagers, then fleeing the scene on foot.
On May 29, 2023, at approximately 11:25 p.m., Jamal Graham, 30, was driving a 2004 Infiniti G35 at a high rate of speed on Hale Street when he allegedly blew through a stop sign at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue. His car collided with a Nissan Rogue carrying a mother, her teenage son, and his friend. The crash resulted in severe injuries for all three occupants.
Emergency surgery was required for both the mother and her son. The mother had portions of her intestines removed, while her son had his spleen removed.
Video surveillance captured Graham exiting his vehicle and fleeing on foot after the crash. He did not call the police or render aid to the victims.
On July 8, 2024, Graham was arraigned before a judge on multiple charges, including two counts of Assault in the Second Degree, two counts of Leaving the Scene of an Incident Without Reporting, one count of Assault in the Third Degree, one count of Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree, and one count of Reckless Driving.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney condemned Graham’s actions.
“This horrific crash injured three occupants of a vehicle and was allegedly caused by a driver who barreled down a residential road at a high rate of speed, blew a stop sign, and then left the scene instead of calling the police or rendering aid to the victims,” he said.
The judge ordered Graham held on $100,000 cash, $200,000 bond, or $1 million partially secured bond during the pendency of the case. He pled not guilty and according to court records, Graham made his bail. He is due back in court on July 16, 2024, and is being represented by the Legal Aid Society.
