Roosevelt Man Arrested for Violent Gym Assault Had Been Released Hours Earlier for Church Robbery

Merrick, NY – A chaotic scene unfolded at a Merrick Planet Fitness on Sunday evening, resulting in the arrest of a Roosevelt man who violently assaulted police officers during his apprehension. The same man had been arrested just the day before on unrelated charges and released.

According to Nassau County Police, the incident began at 7:48 p.m. when a disturbance was reported at Planet Fitness, located at 1630 Merrick Road. Upon arrival, officers found the suspect, Getho Brevette, 27, fleeing the scene in his 2015 Hyundai, heading westbound on Merrick Road.

Shortly after his escape, Brevette was involved in an auto accident. Despite leaving the scene, he inexplicably returned to Planet Fitness, where the confrontation with police escalated dramatically. As officers approached Brevette, he threw an unknown liquid at them, forcibly removed an officer’s body-worn camera, and smashed it on the ground. The situation intensified as Brevette attempted to seize the officer’s weapon, resulting in a violent struggle.

During the altercation, two officers sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation. Brevette, who also required medical attention, was taken to a local hospital.

Brevette faces a litany of charges, including two counts of Assault 2nd Degree, Grand Larceny 4th Degree, Robbery 2nd Degree, Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree, Resisting Arrest, Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd Degree, Sexual Abuse 3rd Degree, Forcible Touching, and Leaving the Scene of an Auto Accident.

Police disclosed that Brevette had been arrested just the day before for a robbery at the First Baptist Church of Westbury. He was released on Sunday, mere hours before the Planet Fitness incident.

He was arraigned on Monday, July 22nd at First District Court in Hempstead. Brevette was issued a temporary order of protection. He pled not guilty and was released on cashless bail. He is set to return to court on July 30th.
