Police Blotter For Nassau County: Elmont Teen Bites Victim and Officer during Violent Outburst

Nassau County Police reported a series of arrests over the weekend, each involving significant criminal activity and resulting in multiple charges for those involved. These are for the week of July 29, 2024.

In Elmont, officers responded to a disturbance at a residence on Belmont Boulevard at 3:25 PM on Sunday, July 28, 2024. Upon arrival, they discovered that Zaire Steele, 18, had been involved in a verbal argument with another female. The situation escalated when Steele bit the female victim on the wrist. As officers attempted to arrest Steele, she resisted, resulting in one officer being bitten on the hand and another being spat on. The injured officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Steele is charged with Assault 2nd Degree, Assault 3rd Degree, Harassment 2nd Degree, Resisting Arrest, and Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd Degree. She was arraigned on Monday, July 29, 2024, at First District Court in Hempstead.

In North Merrick, James Luca, 46, was arrested for an incident that occurred on February 5, 2023. Luca ignited an explosive device and threw it onto the hood of a female victim’s car, causing damage. Luca was pulled over for unrelated Vehicle and Traffic Law Violations on July 28, 2024, and further investigation revealed his involvement in the explosive incident. Luca is charged with Criminal Mischief 1st degree, Arson 3rd degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 1st degree. He was arraigned on Monday, July 29, 2024, at First District Court in Hempstead.

In Roosevelt, officers conducted a traffic stop on a grey Dodge Durango at 1:55 a.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2024, for speeding. The stop led to the discovery of an illegal loaded firearm, metal knuckles, and a substance believed to be crack cocaine. The vehicle’s occupants, Edward Tyler Johnson, 30, Paul Scott, 34, and Andre Yates, 36, were arrested. Johnson is charged with multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Scott and Yates are both charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. All three were arraigned on Monday, July 29, 2024, at First District Court in Hempstead.

In Baldwin, a security guard at Ultra Lanes on Grand Avenue was assaulted by three individuals early on Saturday, July 27, 2024. The suspects, Davian Campbell, 26, Danny Daniels, 26, and Ariel Sariah Gangadeen, 25, attacked the guard, stole his phone, and fled in a white BMW. They were later apprehended with the help of the NYPD, and a loaded firearm was recovered from their vehicle. All three suspects are charged with multiple counts of Robbery and Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Gangadeen also faces charges of Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer and Reckless Driving. They were arraigned on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at First District Court in Hempstead.

In Hicksville, a disturbance at the Days Inn on South Oyster Bay Road led to the arrest of two men on Friday, July 26, 2024. Jelony Conze, 21, used his vehicle to strike a male victim and then attacked him with a machete, causing severe lacerations. His brother, Adoni Omhari Conze, 23, punched the victim in the face. Both suspects were arrested nearby without incident. Jelony Conze is charged with Attempted Murder, multiple counts of Assault, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Adoni Omhari Conze is charged with multiple counts of Assault. They were arraigned on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at First District Court in Hempstead.

In East Norwich, officers responded to a domestic disturbance on Friday, July 26, 2024, involving Jeffery Chatelain, 45. Chatelain had threatened a 21-year-old female victim, putting her in fear for her life. He was found nearby with a loaded Ruger 9MM handgun and was arrested without incident. Chatelain is charged with two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Stalking, and Aggravated Harassment. He was arraigned on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at First District Court in Hempstead.
