Nassau County saw a series of incidents recently, leading to multiple arrests and ongoing investigations. From a robbery in East Williston Park to a violent confrontation with police in Mineola, and a disturbing act of public lewdness in North Bellmore, local authorities have been addressing these crimes. Here are the details of the latest incidents and the charges that have been filed.
Mineola Teen Robbed of Gold Chain in East Williston Park
A 15-year-old boy was walking through the Long Island Railroad parking lot at 447 Sagamore Avenue in East Williston Park on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at 10:30 pm when two unknown males approached him from behind. One of the suspects grabbed the boy’s shirt and removed his gold chain before fleeing on foot.
Officers later arrested Dani Akhtar, 18, of 92 Charles Street, Mineola, in the same parking lot. Akhtar was charged with Robbery 2nd Degree and Grand Larceny 4th Degree and is scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead. The second suspect, described as a white male, 18-25 years old, approximately 6’0” tall, thin build, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with white letters, a white shirt, and black pants, remains at large.

Centereach Woman Arrested for Assaulting Officer in Mineola
Police responded to a disturbance at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building at 1550 Franklin Avenue, Mineola, on Monday, August 5, 2024, at 6:30 pm. Officers were informed that an individual was becoming disorderly and was asked to leave. While escorting the person off the premises, Maria Campanelli, 26, of 3 White Birch Drive, Centereach, intervened and attempted to prevent officers from performing their duties. Despite multiple warnings, Campanelli became noncompliant and caused an officer to trip and fall, injuring his knees and wrist.
Campanelli was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree, Resisting Arrest, and Obstructing Governmental Administration. She is set to be arraigned on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead. The injured officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
North Merrick Man Exposes Himself to Teen at CVS
A 72-year-old North Merrick man was arrested for exposing himself to a 14-year-old girl in the parking lot of a CVS at 2660 Jerusalem Avenue, North Bellmore, on Monday, August 5, 2024, at 5:20 pm. Darwin Taylor, of 1305 Little Whaleneck Road, was observed by the victim touching his genitals.
Taylor was arrested without incident and charged with Public Lewdness, Indecent Exposure, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. He was released on an Appearance Ticket returnable on Monday, August 12, 2024, to First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
