Brentwood Man Severs Left Hand, Three Fingers on Right in Fireworks Accident

A festive night turned into a horrific tragedy for a Brentwood resident when an unexpected fireworks explosion left him severely injured. Suffolk County Police detectives are currently investigating the incident that occurred on Saturday, June 29, 2024.

Barry Nelson, 66, was in the yard of his residence at 71 Eastern Avenue around 9 p.m. when fireworks he was handling exploded, resulting in the severing of his left hand and three fingers on his right hand. He was immediately transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is currently in serious condition.

Neighbors reported hearing a loud bang and rushed to the scene, finding Nelson in distress and called 911.

Suffolk County Police are seeking any information that could help in their investigation of the incident. Detectives urge anyone who may have witnessed the event or has relevant information to contact the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers associated with fireworks.
