Fake Roofer Cons Woman Out of $85K in New Hyde Park

A New Jersey man was arrested on Long Island after allegedly scamming an elderly woman out of $85,000 in North New Hyde Park for roof repair work he never intended to complete.

On June 26th, the 74-year-old female victim was approached at her residence on North 4th Street by a man claiming to be a roofing contractor. The suspect, later identified as Danny Burton, 26, of Piscataway, New Jersey, convinced the woman that her roof needed urgent repairs.

Burton instructed the victim to withdraw money from her bank account on multiple occasions, totaling approximately $85,000. The woman complied each time, trusting the man’s claims. However, her suspicions grew, prompting her to contact a family member who then called 911.

After a thorough investigation, detectives from the Third Squad arrested Burton without incident on July 1st in front of the victim’s residence. Burton is now facing several charges, including Grand Larceny 2nd degree, Criminal Mischief 2nd degree, two counts of Scheme to Defraud 1st degree, and Conspiracy 5th degree. He was arraigned on July 2, 2024, at 99 Main Street, Hempstead.

At the arraignment a temporary order of protection was issued. Burton pled not guilty and was released without bail. He is due back in court on July 15th.
