The Nassau Police Department’s Arson Bomb Squad arrested two Franklin Square men on July 4, 2024, following a fireworks-related incident that highlighted the dangers of illegal explosive devices.
According to detectives, Nicholas Moschonas, 33, of 516 3rd Street, was observed setting off fireworks at the corner of 3rd Street and 2nd Avenue at 6:18 PM. Further investigation revealed that a 2019 Dodge RAM, belonging to Peter Mari, 33, of 905 Hancock Avenue, was packed with numerous boxes of fireworks. Both Moschonas and Mari were taken into custody without incident, and detectives seized 14 cases of fireworks.
The Nassau County Police Department reiterated its zero-tolerance policy regarding the possession and illegal use of fireworks, emphasizing the safety and security risks they pose to residents and visitors. The use of explosives, including fireworks, is illegal and extremely dangerous.
Nicholas Moschonas faces charges of Explosives – Licenses and Certificates, Explosives – Storage, Unlawfully Selling Fireworks, and Reckless Endangerment. Peter Mari is charged with Explosives – Licenses and Certificates. Both defendants were arraigned on Friday, July 5, 2024, at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead. Moschonas pled not guilty and was released on his own recognizance. Mari also pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance. Both men are due back in court on July 10th.
